Integrated Utility Services Ltd meet new regulatory security compliance with Self Defending Network architecture
![]() |
Nowcomm has deployed a sophisticated data security solution for Integrated Utility Services (IUS) which pro-actively monitors and responds to security threats across the entire network.
Why was it required – Business Challenges:
As a subsidiary of CE Electric UK, IUS have built an outstanding reputation on the solid foundations of delivery excellence, whilst maintaining competitiveness in all utility and private infrastructure sectors. The company was in need of a solution to meet regulatory compliance under Sarbanes-Oxley in relation to the security of their infrastructure, and so enlisted the assistance of Nowcomm to develop a pro-active architecture which would provide the necessary levels of data protection.
What will be implemented – Solution:
The recommended solution was based upon Cisco’s Self Defending Network architecture to offer IUS a layered approach to security information management and threat mitigation, incorporating perimeter security, host and network-based intrusion protection and a centralised monitoring and reporting engine to correlate threats across the infrastructure and thereby reduce the number of ‘false positives’. This ‘defense-in-depth’ model puts security threats into context, and extends across the entire network to centrally aggregate logs and events from a wide range of networked devices.
This new solution has allowed IUS to visualise and mitigate incidents in real-time, whilst offering numerous predefined reports to satisfy operational requirements and assist in regulatory compliance efforts, including Sarbanes-Oxley, but the system is also able to comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS), Gramm-Leach Bliley Act (GLBA), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the EU's Revised Basel Capital Framework (Basel II); and others.
Why the customer chose Nowcomm:
As part of the solution, Nowcomm provide a comprehensive managed support contract and technical assistance, to keep all security signatures up-to-date and the architecture operational. Further rollout of additional security devices will ensue in due course, providing further threat mitigation and protection across the company. Additional benefits through adopting Cisco’s Self Defending infrastructure include the ability to provide QoS-based VPN services to remote workers (and so enabling true voice, data and video collaboration in the home and/or on the road), and comprehensive content security services which offer anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware, URL blocking/filtering and content filtering.
Dan says, “Aww, I love these guys.”.
